About 5 inches wide, 4 inches deep and 2.5 inches high. Made from mahogany or a similar hardwood. It has fancy ivory inlays on all sides and a surface condition (patina) that suggests an age of 100 years or older.
The top is actually attached to a smaller, inner box that lifts to reveal a 3.5" by 3/8" slot and a chamber inside. When lifted up and slightly to the side, the inner box sits up and stays there. I cannot separate the two pieces, and can find no puzzle pieces or secret panels
There is no odor or dust inside, nor any marks or initials on the base. There are wear marks at the ends on the slot.
What is it?
