Time is many things to many people, for many good reasons.
To a dying person, time is running out.
Grown-ups lament that ‘time flies’ too quickly, while teenagers complain that it drags on.
To a theoretical physicist, time is the fourth of many possible dimensions. To a philosopher, it is an idea.
In a free society, time is something that prisoners ‘do.’
Big companies squeeze it out and throw it away.
To a Buddhist, time is an illusory cycle to be conquered.
To a baby, time is this moment.
Can there be anything universal about something that is so distinctly and uniquely experienced? I say, we all need time to think. We all need time to learn and play and sleep. If we feel like it, we need time to waste. We need time to make up our minds. We need time to survive and thrive.
The trouble is, we have no time to protect the time that we need.
Spoken like a true grown-up.
